Rainbow Milky anemone corms bloom in a gorgeous creamy white — softer than the stark white of panda varieties, and without the high-drama contrast of the black center. Their pale green center offers a soft, elegant combination that holds its own as a single stem and works wonders in a mixed bouquet.
 
Anemone corms (Anemone coronaria, sometimes called poppy anemone) are all the rage with floral designers and brides, and for good reason. These oversized, poppy-like blooms make exceptional cut flowers and last up to 10 days in the vase when cut at the right stage. Flower farmers say to cut after the bloom has opened and closed twice — hard to track in practice, so watch the stem instead: cut when the leaf collar has dropped about 1/8 inch below the base of the flower head.
 
Planting anemone corms
Soak corms 3–4 hours before planting — they'll swell noticeably. Plant 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart, in full sun and well-drained soil. Containers work well if drainage is good.
 
When to plant: Anemone coronaria is hardy to Zone 7, so in Zone 7 and warmer you can plant directly in the ground in fall for spring blooms. In colder zones, plant in spring, or grow under low tunnels or in containers you can move. Gardeners in Zone 8 (we grow ours in coastal North Carolina) get the longest bloom window.
